If you've never thought about cleaning your mattress before, perhaps it's worth remembering that you generally spend at least six hours a night on it. Combined, dust, dead skin cells, perspiration, and sebum not only infiltrate any mattress over time and leave significant yellow stains on the surface, but they also provide a veritable all-you-can-eat buffet for dust mites!
This article will cover how and what products you will need to deep clean your mattress.

Clean your mattress thoroughly
Whether you have allergies or not, it's always a good idea to give your mattress a thorough cleaning regularly. To keep your bed fresh, free of dust, stains, and odors, our team of cleaning experts serving all of Montreal recommends doing this approximately every two months, starting with:
1. Remove the dust from your mattress:
The easiest way to achieve this effectively is to equip your vacuum cleaner with a dusting brush attachment. By repeatedly pressing or tapping firmly on the mattress, first vacuum the top and sides, while simultaneously dusting as many accessible parts of the bed frame as possible.
Once this first step is completed, you will need to replace the previous nozzle with a flat nozzle, which you will pass over both all the seams of the quilted surface and the piping around the edge.

2. Steam your mattress:
Assuming you have one of these portable garment steamers, at this stage, taking care to hold the device at a sufficient distance to avoid accidental drips, it's important to run it over the entire mattress. The penetrating heat of the steam will kill any dust mites present on the surface, which you will then vacuum again once the steaming is complete.
If, however, you do not have said steamer, you can just as easily use the steam provided by your iron.
3. Treating stains on your mattress:
Those who enjoy snacking in bed or share their nights with a pet won't be surprised to find stains when removing the sheets from the mattress. To treat food stains as effectively as urine or vomit residue, there's a whole range of super stain removers for fabrics and upholstery with odor-fighting enzymes.

With the product in hand, spray it directly onto the stain. Using a cloth, work the solution into the stain. Start at the edge and gradually work your way towards the center, using a circular motion to avoid spreading the stain. Once treated, and to prevent soaking the mattress, it's important to remove any excess product from the stain with a damp cloth. Finally, blot the surface with a dry cloth and allow it to dry completely before making the bed.
How to clean a yellowed mattress?
As mentioned above, a yellowed mattress is often the result of accumulated perspiration and sebum. While it's difficult to clean an entire mattress without risking saturating it, you can nevertheless prepare a whitening solution by mixing one cup of hydrogen peroxide with one cup of hot water, to which you then add 1/4 teaspoon of dish soap.

- After filling a spray bottle with the solution, spray the affected area.
- Using a soft-bristled brush or a washcloth, work the solution into the skin, then let it sit for 30 minutes.
- If the stain persists, feel free to repeat the process, this time adding a little more hydrogen peroxide to the solution. Finally, spray the surface with plain water before blotting and allowing it to dry completely.
Steam cleaners
If you own a steam cleaner, you would be better off using it instead of the method described above. The steam from these household cleaning appliances is effective at softening and loosening ingrained dirt in the mattress without damaging or accelerating wear and tear.
How to deodorize a mattress?

A particularly unpleasant odor should encourage you to treat your mattress and bed base with an anti-allergy disinfectant deodorizer for textiles, specially developed to kill odor-causing bacteria.
For those who like to improvise, baking soda – a natural odor neutralizer – works just as well and can temporarily reduce odors. So, use it: sprinkle it on your mattress, gently brush in the baking soda, and then wait thirty minutes before vacuuming everything up.
How to keep a mattress clean and fresh?
Currently, there is no more effective way to prevent stains and yellowing than using a washable mattress protector. Those prone to allergies will find it helpful to cover their mattress with an absorbent, hypoallergenic, and dust mite-proof cover, for example, which can limit the accumulation of irritants.
